The power cord is definitely needed for this unit. It will go through batteries really quickly.
The printer drinks the batteries, so it's very nice not having to worry about replacing batteries anymore. The overall unit/cable works erffortlessly and awesome. Cable works fantastic. I didn't realize how much this cable was needed.
